What Is Polyester Insulation?

There are many different insulation materials that you can choose from, each with their own unique benefits and weakness’. One of those materials is polyester, which holds some great unique qualities that make it a really handy type of insulation to install in your home. Today, we’ll be looking at some of the facts surrounding polyester insulation and why it’s such a popular wholesale insulation material.

How is it created?

Whilst the everyday material is created through a chemical reaction using a mix of petroleum, air, water and coal – polyester insulation has some extra materials added. Some products may have a blend of plastics, like from recycled plastic bottles and such, whilst other polyester insulation may have wool added into the mix. If you’re interested in what exactly is in the polyester insulation you’re purchasing for your home, then it may pay to ask the retailer specifically.

Benefits

Polyester insulation is an itch-free insulation material, which makes it increasingly easy to handle. They’re typically bound with non-pollutant chemicals but be sure to double check with the manufacturer if it’s something that may affect your decision. As well as being irritant-free, it is also great for asthma sufferers as it does not exude any dust. The fibres within do not become brittle and will not breakdown into small particles that can be inhaled.

Polyester insulation is also fire resistant. It does not attract vermin or develop mould and comes in batts, wall blocks and floor wholesale insulation options. As a whole, this type of insulation is commonly very strong and has a low degradation rate. Another fantastic option is its sustainability. Polyester insulation is 100% recyclable, making it highly cost-effective and environmentally friendly. You should keep in mind, however, that polyester insulation is not very easy to cut through and will need to be cut a few times down the same line for a proper cut to be made.

R-value

Like all insulation, polyester insulations quality and effectiveness is rated using the R-value system. The higher the value, the better the insulation is at keeping your house warm in winter and cool in summer. Depending on where you live, there will be a recommended code that your house must adhere to in terms of R-value. These depend on your climate zone in Australia which can be viewed here.

Typically, R-values range from around 1.5 to 7. Polyester insulation, however, is only made in R1.5, R2, R2.5, R2.7, R3, R3.5, R4 and R4.5. So, this is something you might want to consider when looking to purchase wholesale insulation. Whilst it features some great benefits, the R-value range is not fantastic and may not be what you’re looking for – or what you need – in your house.

Fire and water resistance

As mentioned before, polyester insulation is a non-flammable insulation material. If a fire is burning near your insulation then the polyester will burn at a very slow rate, not attributing to the spread of fire. In a similar fashion, polyester insulation is quite resistant to water. If there is a leak in your home and water falls onto it, then the water will simply pass through it without affecting its qualities or structure. The water will not be held against the timber as polyester insulation does not hold liquid within itself. The soft, thick character of the insulation will be maintained within your wall, ceiling or floor as it was when originally installed.
